What Makes Them Different?

How Lab-Grown Gems Are Created

Flame Fusion (Verneuil Process)

The oldest method, invented in 1902. Powdered chemicals are melted in a flame and crystallize as they cool. Produces rubies, sapphires, and spinels. Quality is lower but production is fast and cheap.

Flux Growth

Crystals grow slowly in a molten chemical solution over months. Produces very high-quality emeralds with natural-looking inclusions. More expensive but results are exceptional.

Hydrothermal Growth

Mimics natural geological conditions with high pressure and temperature. Used for emeralds, quartz, and some sapphires. Can produce large, high-clarity crystals.

HPHT and CVD (for Diamonds)

High Pressure High Temperature recreates diamond-forming conditions. Chemical Vapor Deposition grows diamonds layer by layer from carbon gas. Both produce gem-quality diamonds.

Detection Methods

Gemological labs can reliably distinguish lab-grown from natural stones using:

  • Microscopic examination of growth patterns
  • Spectroscopy to detect trace element differences
  • Fluorescence characteristics
  • Inclusion analysis

Lab-grown gems typically cost 30-90% less than natural equivalents:

  • Diamonds: 70-90% less for lab-grown
  • Rubies: 80-95% less
  • Emeralds: 50-80% less
  • Sapphires: 75-90% less

Value Retention

Natural gems, particularly rare specimens, have historically appreciated in value. Lab-grown gems have depreciated as production costs decrease. For investment purposes, natural stones remain the clear choice.
